General Observation: In civilized society we adhere to certain codes, some of which you may be familiar with: Code of Ethics, Code of Conduct, Code of Honor, Dress codes, Tax codes, Penal Code, etc. And that’s only a smidgen of the offline codes we are all subjected to in one way or another.

But there are also a number of codes that are specific to the online world that affect those of us who are frequent users of the Internet and the digital marketplace; and if you are reading this you may also be familiar with some of these online codes: Country codes, QR codes, Internet Access Codes, Promo codes, Coupon codes, HTML codes, CSS codes, PHP codes and various others that cannot be listed here at this time.

However, there is one basic code which is the most fundamental of all codes pertaining to the use of this incredible resource we know as the Internet. It’s the codes upon which strong passwords are being created. How frustratingly difficult and vulnerable you think our Internet lives would be without codes on which to base strong passwords that are easy to create and remember, but tough to crack into? I think very difficult indeed without these particular codes!

  • Being an Entrepreneur: Skillful, Creative, Committed

A small business owner is expected to be creative and inventive, if s/he is expected to succeed in the operation of his/her enterprise. While small business owners are not expected to be geniuses, most of them are entrepreneurs, and therefore must possess the skill, creativity and commitment to their craft in order to be successful. If you have a sneaky feeling that creativity is not one of your strong points, you may then ask, what can I do to stimulate my brain and get it kicked-started? The answer may lie in the few ideas provided in the following paragraphs

    Be unlimited

Too many people are ‘limited thinkers’. They have their world placed squarely in a box and nothing can exist outside of that. If the newspaper reports something then it must be right. If Joe next door says that something is impossible then he must be right. As a small business owner, you cannot afford to be a ‘limited thinker’.

You have to be an ‘unlimited thinker’ in order to be a successful entrepreneur or enterpriser. Get into the habit of seeing no boundaries; decide that there are no taboos. Be imaginative, originative, even fanciful. Have the belief that with a bit of focus you can find a creative solution to all of your problems. This is the foundation for a creative thought process.

    Be a future-focused writer

Creative ideas invariably come when you ‘look’ into the future. The feeling of propelling yourself forward and seeing the problem solved is a great motivator. Do you think you could achieve the same result if you were backward focused? I don’t think so! Train yourself to be future-focused, always looking ahead, not a traditional thinker who tries to find answers in today’s world.

Once you open your mind to the joys of creativity the ideas will quickly start flowing, as if someone has opened the flood gates! Just like flood water, unless you catch it the ideas are lost for ever. Capture all your ideas by carrying a small pocket notebook with you. As soon as an idea pops into your mind, write it down. It doesn’t matter how outlandish it is, you can look at it in the cold light of day later on.

The fact you are responding to the ideas by noting them will further encourage you to be even more creative – good deeds encourage more good deeds! And the same can be said of “good habits”. If you get into a good habit routine, you will be pleasantly surprised at how your actions will automatically adjust to the good habit routine with little effort on your part.

    Be clutter-free & action-oriented

If you are naturally an untidy person, then get out of the habit! A cluttered office will lead to a cluttered mind. You cannot expect your brain to work efficiently when all it’s doing is constantly reminding you how untidy your office is. To be creative remove all the clutter from your life and free your mind.

All of these points are great, but if you don’t take any action with your ideas, then you may as well not have bothered. An idea is nothing but a thought unless you take a specific action to help bring it to life. Periodically review your notebook and see if there are any hidden gems, or ideas which can be quickly actioned.

A lot of your ideas may not suit at all but in there somewhere is probably an idea, which if acted upon, could change you or your business. Commit fully to move forward on as many of your ideas as you can. Don’t be afraid to break down the boundary walls. As John Stuart Mill said, “That which seems the height of absurdity in one generation often becomes the height of wisdom in the next.”

    And yes… be a dreamer!

There’s a great line in Alice in Wonderland when the Queen says, “Sometimes I think of 6 impossible things before breakfast.” I think you’ll agree that this has to be creativity at its best! As a small business owner this is an ideal you really need to strive for … but how on earth can you open up your mind to get to the point where ideas just spill out?

I’ll leave you with this thought to ponder: If you can be creative enough to be dismissed as a dreamer, you may just be on the fast track to success as an entrepreneur. If not, you need a little practice, and NOW may be as good a time to get started as any.

  • Entrepreneurs Can Translate More Free Time to More Profits

    More time = more money?!

The old adage “Time is money” have been often repeated by many Web entrepreneurs like us, as well as numerous business people in the offline marketplace. This adage rings true in most circumstances because it seems to make sense that the more time you have which can be devoted to plying your trade, the more money you have the potential of earning.

However, in many cases, freeing up this precious time is easier said than done for a lot of entrepreneurs and for various reasons, none more prevalent than finding qualified people to work within our offices/studios/work places. And when we do find the right persons (or assistants) to work with us, we must be mindful of certain labor laws which cover these new employees; But what if there was a way to free up your time without these worries? Ever heard of a VA (Virtual Assistant)?

    The pro VA alternative

A professional VA can offer all the benefits of a traditional administrative assistant, without the need to provide a “space” for him/her. Most VAs offer a wide range of services to pick and choose from; ranging from the basic, such as telephone answering; to the more advanced, such as web hosting and meeting room hire. In this way, how you benefit from a virtual office is entirely up to you and the sky is literally the limit. Just do a Google search for virtual assistant to find available VAs for your business.

According to Wikipedia, “A virtual assistant (typically abbreviated to VA, also called a virtual office assistant) is generally self-employed and provides professional administrative, technical, or creative (social) assistance to clients from a home office. Because virtual assistants are independent contractors rather than employees, clients are not responsible for any employee-related taxes, insurance or benefits (except in the context of those indirect expenses which are included in the VAs fees).”

    Who does this benefit?

Virtual offices can benefit a wide range of users. This ranges from an Web-based entrepreneur working from home seeking a professional image to an international concern looking for a short-term solution to increase global business. In other words, a VA will be beneficial to your entrepreneurship if you are looking to free up some time to devote to marketing your business and leave the administrative work to a qualified someone else.

Not sure if you need a VA? If you are a solopreneur, Webpreneur or entrepreneur the only sensible solution to growth is to add to your staff. Yet, you may have a lot of reasons that prevent you from hiring an “on-site” assistant, even if you need one. Wouldn’t it be great if you had an assistant that was always there for you, when you need them? Say hello to your new virtual assistant, a proven concept that provides great solutions for small businesses and helps to give your new endeavor the manpower it needs.

    Evaluating costs

Salaried workers are much more of an immediate expense. You have to provide a work space, computers, supplies, among other items; and you also have federal and state tax obligations. Don’t forget about benefits – sick leave, vacation time, holidays. Did you know the true cost of an “on-site” assistant is possibly double the cost of their yearly salary in terms of benefits and liabilities?
    It’s true!

Plus the “personality issue” can be problematic when you’re sharing physical office space with someone whom you will probably spend more time with than your family! If it is not a “perfect fit” it can be a strain. Today’s Virtual Assistants are used to getting along with a wide variety of personalities due to the global nature of their businesses. They have a “built in” office manager hat which enables them to handle many difficult situations. You may find that a VA is a perfect fit for your Web business.

  • Creative Ideas Are Central To Your Web Business

    Creative idea? Action!

We all have, from time to time, a bunch of ideas running through our minds; not all of which are creative. However, when you are able to extract the creative ideas, put them on paper and apply them to a Web business, you have more of a chance at success than NOT taking action.

According to the old adage, “having a great idea and not acting on it is essentially the same as NOT having the idea” in the first place; and allowing someone else to take action on YOUR idea is just as bad.

Inaction: A disease of failure. Cure it!

Have you ever been struck by the “Hey! I invented that!” conniption fit? You know the one I’m talking about. It happens when you’re aimlessly watching TV and a commercial pops up marketing THE item you always told your friends, family, and anyone who will listen, would be the next big idea and make you truck loads of money. Now it’s right there on TV staring you in the face and making boatloads of money for someone else.

Or maybe you’re the type that gets convulsive with the “Psssh! I could make that!” twitch. Well whether you have the “I thought of it first” knee-jerks or the “any five year old could do that” spasms, it all boils down to the same coulda-woulda-shoulda disease. The appalling disease of inaction and envy.

    Your idea, your entrepreneurship!

If you’re tired of hearing success stories of Joe Blow selling everything from safety pins to speed boats on eBay (“I could do that!”) or a neighbor making big bucks with his online business from an idea you casually chatted about (“Didn’t I tell you what a great money-making idea that is?”), you can take matters into your own hands and plunge into the world of Web marketing with your own online business.

Now, just so you understand, let me say this up front: There are going to be a few bumps in the road and you may develop some misconceptions that you definitely have to deal with…But understanding what you will need to get started as a Web entrepreneur will go a long way in smoothing out the rough spots for you. So I am providing a couple of the major things (tools?) you are going to need.

    A website: The first hurdle

First and foremost don’t lie to yourself and don’t let anybody else sell you a “bag of goods” and lead you to believe that it’s peaches and cream, either. Do your own preliminary work by learning as much as you can about website creation. You don’t need to learn any fancy new programs from the ground up.

If you’re a real beginner, there are free html editors that you can download from the web; and if you’ve ever typed a document/essay/paper/letter in your life, you basically understand a textual layout and the things you can do to/with it. Your first website is not going to be very… attractive. It may be a very rough prototype. BUT, you’ll have at your disposal, some excellent tools available to you free of charge. Ever heard of Google? Sure you have!

The thing about the Web is people like to talk, and they like to give out information for FREE. So you can take a step-by-step approach to learning just enough html to understand the underlying site structure, and when you have the chance use that helpful little trick of “View>Page Source” (on simple pages, of course… simple but probably better looking than yours as it exists). You can google any html code abbreviations you don’t understand. And before you know it, your self-made website will be up. Like I said, it won’t look pretty, but it’ll be all yours.

Long story short, you’ll learn the fine art of balancing a little too much with just enough. (Helpful hint: just because you now know how to highlight every other word, doesn’t mean you should.) And while you’re patting yourself on the back over a job well done (at least until you can make enough money to hire pros to make your site professionally wonderful), you’re liable to run into misconception number two.

If you build it, they will come

Don’t be shocked if the only people who know of your existence in the early going are family, who you brag to, and your Web hosting company, who you can be sure will always remember you on “invoice day.” You can see where I’m going with this next, right? Ok, I’m not going to re-hash everything you already know about bringing people to your site, nor am I going to preach to you about “conversion rates.”

Let’s just say the bottom line for actually getting your website viewed, is to be creative. There have been hundreds (and will probably be millions) of e-books, eguides and reports which show you the sexiest ways to get traffic to your site, down to the simplest method like…get this…writing an article. THERE IS lot of good information out there; and again, it’s free.

A primary business tool on hold

Ultimately marketers want to sell you something, but you would be surprised at the amount of free information on the Web that is actually worth something and is more than a baited hook. Poke around, do some research, check out a few forums, download a few e-books (free or paid), and above all get creative!

Ultimately, it will be your creative edge, or your USP (Unique Sales Proposition) that will make the difference between the success or failure of your Web business (entrepreneurship), but you definitely need a website (blog-site) AND Web hosting.

  • Starting Your Own Entrepreneurship – Passion, Grit, Vision

    Definition and characteristics

    Give it all you got

In one of my recent posts the question of entrepreneurship was discussed from a standpoint of definition; and although the definition may differ slightly from person to person, entrepreneurship is about a set of principles and values that are seldom found in other areas of life. The way an individual approaches his/her own livelihood and the support of family and lifestyle provides the answer to whether or not that individual is an entrepreneur capable of operating an entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship is the process of creating or seizing an opportunity, and pursuing it regardless of the resources currently in one’s control. According to Wikipedia entrepreneurship is defined as “the act of being an entrepreneur, which can be defined as ‘one who undertakes innovations, finance and business acumen in an effort to transform innovations into economic goods’. This may result in new organizations or may be part of revitalizing mature organizations in response to a perceived opportunity”.
Dictionary.com defines entrepreneur as “a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk”.

Must you be the rebel–mouthy and opinionated? Do you like the thrill of change, always eager for the next new venture? Is your idea of security to never be the victim of a corporation’s downsizing or reengineering? Are you a fiercely independent risk-taker who can comfortably handle the uncertainty of being responsible for your own paycheck? Do you have to possess these characteristics to be an entrepreneur?

Answering “yes” to these questions (except the last one) can put you firmly at the helm of your own entrepreneurship; But the answer to that last question need not be yes for you to qualify to run your own entrepreneurship because you can be, for example, less “mouthy and opinionated” and still be a successful entrepreneur, live a happy, rich life and be in control of your life and career.

    Bare essentials & the research

If you start your entrepreneurship on the Web, you could begin operatiing with as little as $100 in seed money and your experience in your position at your current job and/or past experience. It is reasonable to assume that you’re putting in the required hours, if not more, at your current job, so you may have to work part-time from your home computer for a period of time before your business gains enough momentum that you could quit your day job. And obviously you can continue to work from home until your business income reaches levels of success that affords you some time to relax or do what other successful people do.

All this can be done if you have the passion, commitment and intuitive vision for running your own entrepreneurship. But somewhere along your road to successful entrepreneurship, you’re going to need a secret formula or USP (Unique Sales Proposal). Yes you need a passion for the thrill and independence of being an entrepreneur, but you also must have the commitment to follow through on that passion. Here’s are a few ideas which you can use as your success formula to help you get on your way.

First you have to know where you’re going, so research your chosen industry. Identify types of businesses that match your passionate vision and aptitude. Explore areas that show growth potential and, using your experience and insight, look for a need not presently being filled.

Find a successful company similar to the one you envision owning, and study how it started and how it grew. Learn as much as possible about the entrepreneur behind it. Devour books and publications related to your business concept. Talk to other entrepreneurs to discover their best practices.

    Vision and action

As an entrepreneur-in-training, you’ll need to build basic and advanced leadership skills. A successful entrepreneur is a bold visionary, seeing what others cannot and willing to follow that vision despite naysayers. Many entrepreneurs never finished college, but that hasn’t stopped them from owning large companies like Dell Computer and small companies like neighborhood restaurants and consulting firms. They relied heavily on their visions, not on MBA programs.

Entrepreneurs handle ambiguity with ease. They get a thrill out of leading the way into unfamiliar territory and thumb their noses at failure. Fearless pacesetters, they are usually mystified to find they’re weak at operations and management.

That’s okay. Other people can manage for you, but you must be the guiding force that inspires your managers and staff to follow your vision. You’ll shoulder responsibility and hold yourself personally accountable for the outcome. As a leader you have to focus on the big picture and trust others to focus on the details. People who do it all are self-employed but not entrepreneurial.

You must also be an actor. You act and get things done by delegating, subcontracting and leveraging other people’s talents. You’re innovative and unwaveringly determined, willing to put in fast-moving 16-hour days to reap the rewards of independence, creative freedom and unlimited financial gain.

Learn to be a marketing genius. Everything is marketing, from the way you say “good morning” to the contacts you make. You sell ideas, products and services to potential purchasers by getting inside their minds and creatively communicating benefits.

Above all you must grow your enterprise and make a profit. People who say, “I love it so much I’d do it for free,” are not entrepreneurs–they’re volunteers. Most entrepreneurs are willing to start small and grow slowly, but they fully expect to make money. There is nothing noble about being poor or failing financially.

    The Strategy

When you know where you’re going and have the courage to act, the only thing missing is the strategy for getting you there – but this is no small thing. Jumping into business without a strategic plan is like jumping in the ocean without knowing how to swim. To create the strategic plan, envision your enterprise exactly as you want it to be. Then write down your goals and objectives for achieving that vision. For each goal, create a strategy and a target date for achieving it.

Assess your strengths. You already possess knowledge, skills and experience your enterprise will draw on. List all your strengths that apply to your enterprise. Then appraise your challenges. They might involve market penetration, profitability, expertise, competition or location. Challenges change as your enterprise changes. How will your challenges impact your goals?

    Act the part

Finally, act like a CEO. Create an income and spending plan. Know where your money is going, question every expenditure and keep the cash flow positive. That means taking in more money than you pay out, plain and simple. Make a budget and stick to it. A CEO gets things done through delegation, so create a framework of people who can help you achieve your entrepreneurial vision. Even if you work solo, you can benefit from a myriad of talented consultants, vendors and subcontractors.

If you stick to it and don’t quit on your dream, you’ll look back years from when you started with that small investment and a vision fro your own entrepreneurship, and you’ll probably smile. But whether the smile comes or not you’ll feel a burst of pride within you. That comes as a result of all your hard work, long hours and sheer determination that was necessary to make it happen. You might utter these words: “I did it”!

  • Unique Touch Will Set Your Entrepreneurship Apart

    Approach your entrepreneurship with a
    dare-to-be-different attitude, and it will
create the edge you need to succeed.

    – Tony Phillips

    Your special something

That special something that only you can bring to your entrepreneurship and transfer it to your clients and/or customers has been defined in different ways by different industries. Some refer to it as a “schtick”, others a “modus operandi” or “tactic” and still others, a USP (Unique Sales Proposition/Proposal), the last term used most often in the copywriting business.

That unique touch I refer to adds value to your website and your service or product and is one of the most over looked and under rated strategies for improving your Web entrepreneurship. The Web and modern technology make it possible for anyone to offer that little something extra that nobody else does, and usually at no additional cost.

    The why, what and how!

First the Why! Let’s look at why this is a good practice for big and small businesses alike, including your entrepreneurship: It’s a good thing to do because you will make more money if you integrate the schtick into your daily activities by making it a part of your overall business practice!

Second is the What! Now let’s take a look at exactly what value adding is! Value adding is giving surprise high quality and useful gifts. It’s giving something that your competitors aren’t offering. It’s promising the world and delivering the universe. It’s taking care of your clients and always providing something that your clients need and want, when and where they want it.

Third is the How! We’ll now take a look at the different ways this can be done: If you receive a free gift from someone when you don’t expect it, do you remember that person?

    NAVAN Global, the REAL SEAL!

    The USP example

Answer: Yes, most of us do, especially when it is something we can use or have needed. How can you do this in your entrepreship? The best way to answer this question is with an example as stated below:

If you go out to dinner and order a menu item, what do you expect? You expect to get what you ordered from that menu, right? Now imagine that you ordered a T-Bone steak medium well along with your beverage of choice and whatever side orders comes with the dish.

Say you enjoy your meal and is satisfied with the service as well as the price you pay, which you consider very good or great. You grab the bill and is ready to leave when the restaurant owner comes to your table with a package which turns out to be a bottle of good wine ($25.00 value) from his own cellar and gives it to you with these words: “our special gift to you”. Wouldn’t that make you more likely to go back to that restaurant for future steak dinners? Probably not only steak dinners either!

That’s one simple example, and I understand that it is impractical for you to sell steak dinners in a Web entrepreneurship, but I also understand that everyone may not relate to Internet newsletters or know what an eZine subscriptions is; however, you will agree we all have had a decent restaurant meal at one time or another, so a steak dinner is something we can all relate to. The point is, that restaurant owner got your attention with his unique touch.

    The unique ingredient

Think of something you have that many other entrepreneurs don’t or, if others have it, they cannot serve it or apply it with the same skill or touch you can. You may have studied oceanography in college or maybe you’re a good swimmer who never went to college but have a knack for marine life and you own a Web entreneurship/website about marinas. Add something directly from you that anyone else will find it hard to match. That’s the best description of your unique touch / schtick / USP.

So you can see that by offering this free and unique gift you have achieved several things:

    1. You have developed a product (at no cost to you) that you can sell and make a profit on. Think of it this way: Your unique touch, when added to an existing product has the potential of making that product like new. Just like new paint on an old house. “A coat of paint makes it what it ain’t”.
    2. You have used that product to increase the chances of your new entrepreneurship getting repeat customers or visitors to your website (prospects now but future customers), as well as keeping their attention, if not loyalty will ensure that any specials you run and notify them via email they will open, so your list will also be easier to maintain.
    3. You have promoted you site/service to other Web marketers that you may wish to do a joint venture with at some time.

Other ways to add value for less effort is to:

    • Offer a 110 percent guarantee instead of a 100 percent.
    • Offer FREE tips about how to get the best out of your product, etc., get the idea?
    • It’s all just a matter of finding ways that you can give more, because the more you give the more you will receive.

I sincerely believe that and I hope you do also…You’ll be better off for it. Good luck!
