  • Bookkeeping

    Payroll, etc.

Bookkeeping is an interesting subject in more ways than one because of the intricacies involved as well as the extent to which it is utilized in our personal and business lives. So what goes on in the accounting and bookkeeping departments at big and small businesses alike? And what do these people we know as bookkeepers do on a daily basis? Well, one thing they do that is terribly important to everyone working in those businesses is payroll.

All the salaries and bonuses earned, and taxes paid by every employee every pay period have to be recorded. The payroll department has to ensure that the appropriate federal, state and local taxes are being deducted; and the pay stub attached to each employee paycheck is an ongoing record of these taxes and any number of other deducted items.

    Deductions

Such items usually include income taxes, social security taxes and other employment-related taxes that have to be paid to federal and state governments. Other deductions include personal items, such as retirement savings accounts like 401(k), IRA, RRB (Railroad Retirement Board Benefits, as well as vacation, sick pay and/or medical benefits. It’s a critical function, and for that reason, some companies have their own payroll departments while others outsource it to bookkeeping specialists.

The accounting department receives and records any payments or cash received from customers or clients of the business or service. The accounting department has to make sure that the money is sourced accurately and deposited in the appropriate accounts. They also manage where the money goes; how much of it is kept on-hand for purposes such as payroll, or how much of it goes out to pay what the company owes on its loans, to its vendors and other such obligations. Some may also be invested, depending on the particular business policies.

    Receivables

The other side of a receivables business is the payables area, or cash disbursements. A company writes many checks during the course of a year in order to pay for purchases, supplies, salaries, taxes, loans and services. The accounting department prepares all these checks and records whom they were disbursed to, how much and for what.

Accounting departments also keep track of purchase orders placed for inventory, such as products that will be sold to customers or clients. In addition to all these responsibilities, they also keep track of assets such as a business’ property and equipment, which often includes the office building, furniture, computers, and even the smallest items such as pencils, pens, notepads and other similar paraphernalia.

  • The Home-based Business Phenomenon

    Present-day American dreams

Present-day American families have the same dreams shared by families a few decades ago; buy a home, provide for the health and welfare of their children, and send those children to college. But the price tag for fulfilling these dreams climbs higher and higher every day, making it much more difficult to achieve the same standard of living that families enjoyed in past decades.

It used to be that a husband went off to work in the morning and the wife stayed home doing household chores and taking care of the kids; but the days of one-income households are long gone and both parents must now go out to work – when they can find it.

However, as the old familiar adage suggests, “necessity is the mother of invention” and accordingly, many enterprising single moms & dads, and even husband & wife teams are finding ways to stay home, and still earn a living via opportunities that are springing up all over the country as a result of the tremendous growth of an industry that makes work at home possible.

The (HBB) industry has made it possible for anyone with some basic skills, a computer and Internet access to start a business at home. For example, an individual with a background in word processing can create his/her own in-home word processing business.

    Getting started

Before you begin your however, it is important to do your research. Find out what kind of software program will be most suitable for the type of business you intend on doing. You will also want your computer system to be compatible with your clients and customers.

Next, look at the make-up of your industrial area. An arts community, or a thriving business area? By checking out the demographics of your area, you can make a decision regarding the type of advertising you want to use.

In the beginning, you will want to try all sorts of advertising. Neighborhood newspapers are an inexpensive way to advertise, but they usually only published on a weekly basis and that may not be enough to keep the clients rolling in. You can put your name on the bulletin board at your local supermarket and pass out flyers door-to-door in large office buildings or other business complexes.

Although it may be more expensive than neighborhood newspapers, you may want to run an ad in your local daily newspaper (in the business services section). Church bulletins and university newspapers that sell advertising may also be a relatively inexpensive way to go. You should also get your business cards printed up right away; and don’t let a client walk out the door without one or two business cards. Repeat business and word-of-mouth may well be your best advertising tool.

    Get started now… Free!

Whatever methods you choose to employ in your advertising, do yourself a favor and track the responses. Put a check list next to your telephone and whenever a call comes in (whether you get hired or not) ask the prospective client where s/he found out about you. It won’t take long for you to discover where your most cost-effective advertising comes from and when you know that, you can punch it up and drop the ones that aren’t doing anything for you.

    Do your homework!

One telephone call will be the only opportunity you have to sell your service. If you hesitate when asked a price for a particular project, you will probably lose the job so do your homework. Call the competition and ask what they are charging. If the competition is out of your immediate geographic area (and you are therefore not a threat to their livelihood), you may want to be straight with them and tell them you are starting a in their field and ask for their input. You may be surprised to find them willing to help out with important information.

Keep in mind that there are myriad of tasks that need to be undertaken in order to establish the fundamental operations of your new home-based business. Whether you expect to get clients from the Internet or not, it is necessary to set up your business in a manner that will accommodate local clients/customers. So business letter heads, envelopes, forms, business cards, invoices and other paraphernalia will be necessary.

It will also become necessary to establish your pricing policies and have them available upon inquiry. Depending on your business, you could set a basic rate which can be a flat rate or a percentage.

    For example…

…Using the business of word processing for a pricing example, a prospective client may call asking what you charge for 4 single-spaced pages. Your answer might be $45.00 per page straight text and then when the client comes, you discover that what s/he has is 4 pages of extremely complicated tables – definitely NOT STRAIGHT TEXT.

By not making firm pricing commitments over the phone, you will have the flexibility to charge a more accurate price when a client brings you something other than what you were expecting.

Elaborating further on the word processing example, to some clients a resume may be a single spaced page, but it takes a lot longer to type than a business letter and you will want to charge more for resumes. You will want to establish an hourly rate for tables, transcription and other more time-consuming jobs.

Always keep in mind that your pricing will change as you become more familiar with what your clients demand, and you may find yourself doing a lot of list maintenance and merge letters, or you may be doing work primarily for doctors, or attorneys; so you need to have a good basis for your pricing… but be flexible.

There are several models you can choose from, each one giving you the same flexibility to create your own USP (Unique Selling Proposition), as well as your own operational balance sheet. After all, the income & expense aspect of any business is usually an excellent indicator of that business’ prospects for success or failure; and truth be told, no business – new or old – start out with failure as an aspirational milestone. Therefore, it is success to which they aspire and choosing the type of home-based business to launch could make all the difference.

    Choice of business types

The two business types that came to mind – based on my own – experiences are: Promotion and Distribution. You can choose to be a promoter or a distributor in addition to all the other choices that are available; but I have provided a glimpse of each vocation with the help of two other publishers whose knowledge of the topics is unquestioned.

According to a What is Promotion? article published to the Slide Player website, “Promotion is any form of communication a business or organization uses to inform, persuade, or remind people about its products and improve its public image. Product Promotion: 1) Explains the major features and benefits of its products (especially in relation to competitors), 2) tells where the products are sold, 3) advertises sales on those products, 4) answers customer questions, and 5) introduces new products…”

…And Distribution is described in the following manner: After a product is fully developed and offered at a competitive price, it must be delivered to an identified target audience. The place element of the marketing mix is where product production and distribution channels are decided and planned. The decisions made in this step directly affect the types of communication that are used to tell the target audience about a product.” This description is provided in the article, What Is the Difference Between Place & Promotion in the Marketing Mix? Written by Tim Burris for the Chron website. And there are so many more!

  • Article Writing – Affordable Web Marketing Task!

From Overture, a keyword suggestion tool, you will see the millions of searches done for a certain keyword. When these keywords are typed in search boxes of search engines, indexed websites containing articles with those keywords will be displayed. And this is what leads traffic to websites with keyword-rich articles. Yes, the magic word is articles.

Content is king. You can say that again. That is why writing articles is one of the most utilized in Web marketing activity today. Web surfers just can’t get enough of information on various fields. Providing information through these articles is a surefire way to drive hot traffic to your web site.

    Why is this so?

Following are few benefits that can enhance your Web business from writing articles:

    1) It’s absolutely free

Too good to be true? Not really, although you do have to pay your Internet Service Provider; but that’s it. All you need is your thoughts, your computer, and your hands. If you have those, nothing will stop you from typing words that will make you complete that article for your website. So for which aspect of that process did you really shell out a red cent? Not immediately, but perhaps later when your electric bill come.

    2) Your website will be noticed in a shorter period of time.

Submit that article of yours to article directories that get the most web traffic and in no time your web site will be crawled. That is if you don’t forget including your resource box or byline.

    3) Obtain back links automatically.

When you submit your articles to directories, surely, other websites will make use of your article too. With the copyright terms of your articles, the URL of your website will still be in tact and will subsequently direct more traffic to your website.

    4) Improve your reputation.

As an Internet marketer, if you plainly display your products on your website, you will not gain much conversion rate. Conversion is when your traffic converts to sales. You have to show that you are knowledgeable on your field. And what better way to show that than by writing articles that will allow you some bragging rights, right?

Just make your creative juices flow and jot down or key in those ideas quickly to jumpstart your article writing momentum. With those benefits listed above, a writer’s block is the last problem you will ever be able to surmount.

Keep in mind that your writing need not be restricted to articles, because there are other modes of writing that are just as attractive to search engines. Those include: ebooks, blog posts, newsletters and public announcements, among others. So write! And write some more…just make your writing interesting and compelling for both humans and the search engine bots.

  • Making Your Amazon Affiliate Store Go Viral

    From failure to success

If you’ve tried to make money with Amazon (or any affiliate marketing system for that matter) the part where most people fail is getting traffic to their affiliate sites, or the product pages of the merchants with which they are affiliated. However, this failure can easily be converted into success by utilizing the right tools.

With that in mind it is important for affiliates to grasp the concept of viral traffic – the easiest, best and most targeted traffic any marketer can get – when done right. So if you’re an affiliate marketer this is certainly something you should keep in mind and learn how to utilize viral traffic in your marketing efforts.

    Viral traffic done right

Let’s start by taking a closer look at viral traffic and how to get it done the right way. First and foremost, in order for something to go viral it needs to be comprised of the following:

    • Value
    • Share-ability
    • Congruency

If you can give people something they’re interested in like a gift, report, video training, or a software tool that fixes their issue… whatever it is – and for them to fix that all they have to do is click a button? Well… that’s gold right there! But you’re problably already aware of this fact.

However, what you may not already know is that ShopABot performs all these functions for you automatically, while building an email subscriber list AND rewards them for buying through your link… and even sharing your store and your affiliate links for you. When ShopABot has found your niche, working out what kind of gift to pair it up with is easy.

    Click of a button

For example, if you click the button and it has found that Green Tea is the perfect niche for you, the rest is easy because all you have to do is give away any kind of item like a report or other similar gift that shows how to:

    • How to brew your tea for maximum flavor
    • 20 iced tea recipes
    • The x health benefits from Green Tea
    • Where to find top quality teas at bargain prices
    • Places around the globe for exquisite tea experiences

In that report, you could even get a little more creative and include other related recommended resources. For example… they are buying green tea, maybe they also need a kettle, or some fancy teacups etc. And if you’re doing the traffic manually (instead of using ShopABot), it’s still a good idea to stick with social media; because of all the things you know about social media, and have heard about social media, the most powerful thing about is it’s like word of mouth, but on steroids!

Click here to get a closer look at what many of today’s Web marketers consider to be one of the most powerful, effective and easy-to-use viral traffic software programs available on the Internet today.

    Sites of focus

There are really three sites you should focus on in the beginning:

    1. Facebook – This is the goliath of social media. It’s important to get a fan page created for your website ASAP.
    2. Pinterest – There’s not many sites that can bring more traffic than Pinterest, especially if you use it correctly. Post often, post relevant content that is likely to be re-pinned a lot, and follow as many accounts relevant to your niche as you can.
    3. Instagram – You may have been expecting Twitter to be the third site, but I’ve actually found Instagram a lot more effective than Twitter. There are no “secrets” to Instagram, really. Just follow relevant users, like and comment on their content, and post great images on a regular basis with relevant hashtags. It’s easy.

    Get the ball rolling!

Twitter is probably the next one you should focus on, followed by YouTube, and then others like Snapchat. But be careful to grow your social media at a natural rate, because if you follow too many people, make too many comments, create too many posts that might be construed as promotions (among other seemingly rapid activities) too quickly, you could get banned. That having been said, however, using the viral traffic system inbuilt in ShopABot, you can avoid any potential backlash because it’s your visitors who are sharing. You just get the ball rolling by giving away free stuff and you’ll see for yourself that the affiliate commissions will snowball from there!

  • Blend Email With Other Marketing Strategies!

    The concept

Whether you choose to do your marketing online or offline one thing does not change: The concept that no single marketing strategy will be as effective as utilizing a blend of two or more marketing strategies. This does not mean that it is necessary to implement every known marketing strategy to promote your business; but rather, it implies that it’s worthwhile to market from a few different perspectives in order to help achieve business-related goals.

In this article we will take a look at the viability, need and practicality of combining email marketing with other types of marketing to create a successful, multi-tiered marketing strategy and in addition, offer a few observations on managing more than one marketing strategy simultaneously in the hopes that they will prove useful to you in your Web marketing efforts.

    The adage

There is an old adage which states that, “Two heads are better than one,” and this could certainly be applied to a multi-pronged approach to Web marketing; because although you may enjoy a great deal of success with your current email marketing efforts it does not mean you should refuse to try other types of Web marketing strategies such as, website creation, participation in industry-related message boards, placing banner ads on your website(s), orchestrating an affiliate marketing campaign and generating inbound links to .

It is important to keep in mind that, while the possibility exists that not all of these strategies will be effective for your business, the liklihood that at least one other option which complements your email marketing will help you to achieve your business-related goals. But there is only one way to actually test the blend of marketing types, and that is to test each one in a methodical fashion simililar to the kind of “split testing” that proved to be so effective for many marketers a decade or so ago, and is still utilized by marketers to evaluate the effectiveness of their marketing strategies.

    The offline factor

Alternately you even wish to combine your email marketing campaign with more traditional marketing strategies such as radio ads, television ads and the print media. Let’s face it, just because these types of advertising do not take place the Web does not mean they will be ineffective in helping you generate more business and profits.

In fact advertising both online and offline can allow you to reach a larger audience to which you can target your advertising. This is especially true in view of the fact that you can reach Web users around the world, but reaching potential customers who do not utilize the Web for purchasing or researching products or services similar to the ones you offer can only be accomplished using offline marketing strategies.

    A powerful statement

Popular marketing strategies to combine with email marketing include banner ads and message board participation, but these are all online activities and each one individually is fairly simple. However, in combination these simple activities can create a powerful statement, in the sense that when you send out emails offering useful information about your products or services, while simultaneously purchasing banner ad space on with content which may also be of interest to your potential customers, you can earn the respect and pique the interest of potential customers.

Furthermore, let’s say you add a third marketing strategy like participation in industry-related message boards. When done right this could well be a powerful representation of your business, even if your potential customers are not currently in need of the products and services you offer; because seeing your business name so often will most likely have a branding effect that is credible and positive in their minds. And branding, which is essentially a process during which consumers see a company name so often that they are more likely to select a product from this company when they are in need of an item the company offers, will go a long way in boosting your reputation and customer base.

    The caveat emptor mindset

Of course you must approach your experiment in blending marketing strategies with a “Caveat Emptor” mindset, because if you are planning to combine multiple forms of advertising, you should be aware that this might involve a degree of difficulty when evaluating the effectiveness of each marketing strategy.

This difficulty is especially true when the marketing strategies are implemented simultaneously. When using only one type of marketing strategy, you can generally attribute increases in sales or traffic to changes in the marketing strategy. However, when more than one type of marketing strategy is in effect, determining which strategy is producing the most success can be quite difficult.

    Methodical work

But remember, this experiment must be done in a careful and methodical manner. Meaning that the best way this situation can be handled is by not making changes to more than one marketing strategy at a time. By doing so you will be able to pinpoint which changes produce an increase in sales or traffic. The methodical approach can also help you to determine when changes to your marketing strategy have a detrimental effect on your sales and traffic. However, if you are having difficulty determining which marketing strategy is most effective you can consider asking customers to answer survey questions and provide information as to how they learned about the products or services your business offers.

  • The Role of Articles in Building Your List

    Comparative excellence

    What are you waiting for?

Getting visitors to your site should always be ranked as high in importance as the quality of the products and services you provide. This objective should go hand in hand with providing your customers the satisfaction they get in exchange for the money they have paid for them. Customer service should be as superb as well so that customers are provided with the same satisfaction.

One of the ways you can combine marketing and customer service is through opt-in marketing, and with an opt-in list you get the opportunity to introduce your site and products in an agreed-upon time frame. An opt-in marketing strategy is a marketing strategy that is actually low-cost and not time consuming, simply because you get the consent of your website visitors to subscribe to your emails, newsletters and other promotional materials such as catalogs and free promotions.

    Opt-in marketing is a process

Since opt-in marketing is the process by which you send emails to your list of subscribers, these emails can include almost any content you wish to send to your subscribers as long as such content is in good taste, legal and useful to the subscribers. For this reason, it is therefore essential that you present your promotional items in a manner that will attract the interest of your subscribers to keep them wanting (craving?) for more; and the best way to do this is to provide fun, entertainment and informational – if not interesting – articles.

Well written article content that consists of helpful tips and useful information will be crucial in building your list as increased numbers of your website visitors will be enticed to subscribe to your list. When they read the samples of your website content, they will be intrigued as to what will come next and subscribing to your newsletter is one way for them to get a glimpse of what you have to offer next.

    Placing importance

It is a known fact that many sites and companies have come to accept and, indeed, place a high value on the importance of articles as they also help in improved search engine optimization; and as more people head to the internet for their information needs, serving the right information to them via articles via your website will increase the flow of your website traffic. And with more traffic, the percentage of your sales will grow, which in many cases can be converted into more profit.

The rise in importance of well written, information-rich, keyword-packed articles for website content has certainly been noticed and encouraged by major search engines for over two decades, and this has led to a craving for quality content by all sectors of the Internet marketplace. Today, any content that can be described as interesting and/or compelling is placed very high on a website’s must-have list. This includes newsletters, ebooks, blog posts and any other article inclusive product; because these articles provide the information which are sought by many Internet users, and if your site has them, more people will visiting that site for information and research.

    Reputation & credibility

It is also true that well-written articles would boost your sites reputation, and if they are filled with a lot of useful information you will be regarded as well-informed and an expert on the subjects you write about. Of course, your articles must be well researched so that Internet users who visit your website will trust you, and when you have gained their trust, they will always come to you for the information they need about the topic on which they view you as the expert.

As a matter of course you must write articles or commission them to be written on subjects that are closely connected with your type of business. So if you have a site dealing with matters of medicine or offering remedies for a certain disease, your articles must be about that disease and its potential cures. On the other hand, if you sell materials for home improvement you must write and publish articles with those themes. Most articles searched for are tips, guidelines, methods, manuals and such, but if you provide relevant articles to your customers and you gain their trust, they will always go to your site for help and advice, as well as for your products.

    Loyalty

With the loyalty of these customers, they may subscribe to your opt-in list to receive all the information you have; and if you provide them with the answers for their needs, they will be happy to be receiving your emails, newsletters and other promotional materials to keep them well informed. Others may even forward your emails to other people when they find a certain article interesting.

You should provide links in your newsletter so that when other people read it and wish to read more, they can click on the link and go to your site. With the articles you’ve published to your site that are good, they may decide to sign up as well to your opt-in list. This will build your list and make it bigger, but make sure to keep your subscribers happy and interested in your newsletters and promotional materials.

Keep on posting and writing good articles for your site and newsletter, and if you have no interest in writing them, or if you just don’t have the time, there are many available, well experienced and knowledgeable writers available to help you compose interesting and compelling articles on the topic of your choice. This is an investment that will pay for itself in time.

  • Subtlety in Email Marketing

    Know the distinctions!

Typical Web users receive tons of emails encouraging them to purchase certain products or visit specific websites owned or managed by the email senders or merchants with whom they are affiliated; and while these emails arrive in inboxes of unsuspecting web users each day, most of them pay very little attention to such emails. This is because emails which are blatant advertisements are often viewed as spam, and most Web users have very little tolerance for spam; but it is very important to understand the distinction between these two types of communication.

One distinction is the reaction of recipients, which is to say that reactions to spam tend to range from simply ignoring such emails and having the email addresses blocked from sending future communications, to reporting such emails to their Internet service providers (ISPs) for further investigation. We realize many Web marketers have difficulty keeping their email marketing subtle and, as such, this article will provide some information which we hope will be useful in determining how email marketing can be kept subtle so it is not viewed as spam.

    Criteria for subtlety

Among the most important criteria for ensuring your email marketing is done in as subtle a manner as possible and not be viewed as spam is to provide something of quality to your recipients. This thing of quality may consist of insightful articles, interesting quizzes or other useful facts which members of the target audience are likely to find useful, if not valuable.

The simple fact is when email recipients realize that an email they received is offering them something worthwhile such as knowledge or information about a particular niche subject they are much more likely to spend some time reviewing the email and therefore will not likely consider the email to be spam. In addition to using the creation of something qualitative to convince recipients that the email is not spam, business owners can also take advantage of qualitative content to provide subtle advertising which may include product references in the articles or links to his/her website throughout the email.

    Avoid outrageous claims

Avoiding language which makes outrageous claims can also help to keep advertising quite subtle since the opposite – using certain superlatives and adjectives of greatness with which to describe specific products – is likely to be viewed as blatant advertising. When such language is used, it is highly unlikely that email recipients will believe there is validity in anything contained within the email because they will believe the entire email is simply one big advertisement for the senders’ products or services.

One method proven to be most effective in keeping advertisements subtle when running email marketing campaigns is to only send your email(s) to those who are likely to be extremely interested in your products and services. This is important because when email recipients receive an email that does not reflect their interests in any manner or form, they are not likely to take the email seriously and may very well view such email(s) as a blatant advertisement or spam.

    Blatant advertisement is taboo

However, when emails are sent only to those who share a common interest the email seems more personalized and therefore, those email recipients are not likely to view every product reference as a blatant advertisement since they understand there is sometimes a need to mention products or services in emails of high quality content which are sent legitimately.

Finally email marketing is considered subtle – and remains so – when the content of campaign emails is written as though it is not coming directly from the business owner. In other words, the copy might discuss products and services as though they are being offered by a third party. This method makes the advertising seem more subtle because it does not appear to come directly from the business owner.

    Be minful of perceptions

Of course, business owners can help to ensure their email marketing efforts are not viewed as blatant advertisements by keeping reference to their own website to an absolute minimum, while being mindful of the fact that most Web users often view links from one website to another strictly as advertisements. For this reason it might be advisable for business owners who are promoting products/services via an email campaign to keep links to a minimum and to carefully weave these links into even the most quite benign copy.

The links should be provided as though they were only included to provide readers with an opportunity to learn more about certain products/services and not as a way to encourage them to purchase these products/services. It might be worthwhile for business owners to consider hiring a writer with this type of skill and experience to ensure the copy conveys desired message, message formats and message intent which should therefore convey the desired effect to the email recipients.
